Job Description

This position is located in the State Environmental Laboratory Services Division - Sample & Data Management Section, in Oklahoma City, OK.

Basic Purpose

The position of Laboratory Data Scientist provides critical technical, business, and operational support of the State Environmental Laboratory Services Division's Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and will be an active participant in the Sample and Data Management Section. In this data driven role, candidates can expect to be involved in laboratory data evaluation, data export error resolution, lab systems monitoring, laboratory quality control activities, equipment and instrument configuration, customer account management, documentation, technical assistance, staff training, change control, program support, and LIMS requirement scoping, configuration and testing.

Typical Functions

1. Interface with laboratory management and staff to gather and document information, needs, and requirements related to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) application configuration and development projects.

2. Work with Data Management staff and vendor consultants to further the implementation of the application by participating in change control, understanding program support, gathering requirements, performing configuration tasks, and product testing. Must also monitor system performance and report issues to LIMS Administrators for resolution or escalation.

3. Responsible for data reporting, export, and error resolution for regulatory compliance samples. This also includes the generation and export of standard and custom Electronic Data Deliverables (EDDs) as requested.

4. Regularly perform laboratory data evaluations, lab systems monitoring, troubleshooting, quality assurance, and quality control activities.

5. Take part in equipment and instrument onboarding, implementation, and interfacing while working alongside laboratory technical staff and management.

6. Operate in a manner that follows standardized administrative, organizational, and laboratory practices and to evaluate and gain efficiencies.

7. Participate in training events and programs to build expertise required to be effective for this technical position. Maintain training and certifications required to adequately support laboratory and customer needs as they relate to LIMS in an effort to streamline processes that will benefit staff, customers, and stakeholders.

8. Assist agency staff or customers in cases of emergency response, high priority environmental investigations, and public health complaints to provide real time data deliverables or other necessary support to lab staff and management.

9. Conduct all work in accordance with agency and divisional policies, programs, and procedures that include but are not limited to: DEQ APMs/SOPs, the SELSD Quality Assurance Plan, SELSD Data Quality Manual, and the SELSD Ethics and Data Integrity Program.

10. Promote a safety-minded culture and ensure all work is conducted in accordance with Agency and Divisional safety policies and procedures.

11. Must be able to collaborate in a team setting and possess the ability to adapt and prioritize tasks while working independently, to meet deadlines and changing schedules based on customer, agency, divisional, or sectional

Education and Experience

Consists of bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or a related science field and at least one (1) year of qualifying technical experience in a professional laboratory setting. Previous experience with largescale data entry is applicable. Salary may be commensurate for applicants with additional experience.

Functional knowledge of the principles, technologies, methodologies of environmental sampling and analysis is desired. A base knowledge of data management and virtual infrastructure is also preferred.

Travel:

Occasional travel required. No longer than a week at a time.

Special Requirements

Applicant must possess excellent customer service skills and be comfortable with face-to-face interactions, written or verbal communication, and professional correspondence. Candidate must be able to demonstrate experience with the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills are also required. LabWare LIMS Administration I certification and course completion will be required within 6 months of hire. Occasional travel required. There is a potential for work outside of normal business hours including to evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays in the event of a public health or environmental emergency.
